| Ava smiled as she got out of the hospital. She and one of her coworkers had been sent there to interrogate a witness from the case they were working on. He had been stabbed as well, just like the victim, but his wounds were not very serious. She was really happy, because they had found out some really interesting details that were probably going to help them solve this case. It was a really interesting one, with lots of suspects, so she had all the rights to be glad that this investigation was going to get to an end soon enough. She just managed to turn her eyes to her coworker, in order to tell him something, when she heard a gunshot and felt a killing pain in her abdomen. She gasped, unable to breath or say anything. She fell on the cold ground. She was surprised that the murdered (probably!) hadn't shot again, but only her. He was probably trying to get rid of the detectives working on the case, so why exactly her? Ava shut her eyes tightly as she remained in place. She couldn't move, she couldn't talk, she couldn't even breath properly. All she heard was her coworker saying that he would bring someone to help and then footsteps running back inside of the hospital.

Victor was doing his rounds, checking on all his patients in recovery when he heard an ear-splitting shot. Dropping his notes on the patient bed he rushed out, just in time to see a pretty blonde fall to the ground. "Get her a gurney!" he shouted to a nearby nurse who was looking a bit panicked as he himself rushed to Ava's side. While she rushed off, Victor tried to stem her bleeding. "Miss, you'll be ok. We're gonna take you to the E.R. I'm gonna do everything I can to get you through this." Just then the nurse arrived with the gurney. "Ok, take her legs, and on my count, lift her. But gently! I don't want any more damage to be done to her, you hear?" The pair lifted her on and rushed her off to E.R to start the hopefully-successful course of action to make her ok again.

Ava shut her eyes tightly. She had never experienced something like this and she had hoped that it would never happen to her. And honestly, she had gone on many missions and some of her colleagues had been shot, but it had never happened to her. And it was like her heart was telling her that it was not going to happen, it was like she was feeling invincible. But it seemed like it came not on a mission, but a completely unexpected moment. She opened her eyes only when she heard footsteps rushing towards her. She assumed it was the doctor and a nurse, by the way they talked. She couldn't even see properly. She felt herself being lifted by the pair and put on a gurney, before passing unconscious.

Victor reached for her hand as they wheeled her. "Miss? Can you hear me? I'm Dr. Hunt. We're gonna make sure you're ok..." He realized that she'd fallen unconscious and swore in his mind. As more familiar faces joined him, in the way of nurses, he started issuing instructions. He looked down at her hip where he saw her police badge. "Phone MDPD! They're missing one of their own. Find her name out!" he barked. He leaned over to Ava's ear and whispered, "You'll be ok. I'll make sure of it..."

Ava remained unconscious, but in a way that she could still hear something in the distance. She heard voices and footsteps, but she was not able to open her eyes, to move or to talk. It was probably the damage of the bullet she had received in her stomach, but also the shock. She felt someone holding her hand, but she didn't know who it was. She assumed it was her coworker though...

A nurse rushed up to him. "Dr. Hunt, her name is Ava Smith, we've notified MDPD..." Victor nodded. "We're taking her into surgery. Now!"

Ava heard something about surgery and her eyes fluttered open. She hated that. Not that she had to undergo surgery, but the fact that after that, she had to have some time of recovery. And she knew what that meant: no working, no chasing, no running. And she lived for her job. They had now such an interesting case, yet she was probably not going to be able to work on it anymore. Her thoughts were stopped by the nurse, who injected her something to put her to sleep.

He saw her beautiful brown eyes flutter open. "Ava, it's ok. You're ok..." He squeezed her hand and then momentarily wondered why he was feeling more personal towards this case as opposed to others, then shook his thoughts away. He saw the nurse inject anaesthetic and watched as her eyes slowly closed. "Ok, team we're ready..."

Ava layed unconscious on the operating table. Her coworker had gone back to work, as he couldn't take his day off. However, when Caine and her colleagues found out, they were surprised and scared for her. She had been shot in a difficult area, so it was not going to be easy. Hwoever, the most important thing right now was her to survive.

| Even though he had so many years of experience, he was still worried about Ava. But he pushed aside all thoughts and concentrated on getting the bullet out and stopping the bleeding. He worked swiftly and efficiently and soon he was able to breathe a sigh of relief. "She's stable. Let's get her into recovery," he said, watching his pretty patient. He walked with the nurses as they wheeled her into recovery. He couldn't help but give her hand a small squeeze as he said, "Congrats everyone..." He decided to sit with her until she came to.

Ava woke up after a while. She had no idea what had happened, but it seemed like the surgery had gone well. She was in a room with a single bed. She felt her body heavy anyway and she had some trouble opening her eyes, but she finally did. She took a deep breath. She could feel something in her abdomen, but not exactly pain. Her hand reached out to move a lock of hair from her face. She sighed and looked around. She hated hospitals. Not being in a hospital, actually. From that perspective, she really liked them. She didn't like being the patient, that was.

Ava coughed a bit, then passed a hand over her forehead. She looked at the man who had spoken. He was probably her doctor. And even in the situation she was in, she couldn't not notice that he was very good-looking. But she had no time for that then. She sighed. "I'm good," she said hoarsely. "I guess..."

Ava coughed again as she looked up at him. "I came to the hospital to talk to Mr.Brown, one of your patients, I believe. He was stabbed in the back. He is a witness for our latest crime. After we spoke to him, we got out of the hospital. I heard a gunshot and I felt the bullet hitting me. That's...all I know."

Victor nodded as he listened to her. "I know exactly the one..." He prided himself on his photographic memory. "I'm sure your colleague could interview him..." He busied himself checking her blood pressure. "We need to keep you in recovery for the next few days at least, till we know you're properly on the mend." He grinned, "Don't worry - the hospital food isn't terrible here..."

When she heard that she would have to stay at the hospital for the next few days - at least -, Ava's eyes widened and she let out a groan. "Oh man..." she said. She smiled though when he mentioned the hospital food, which was not bad. She looked up at him and sighed. "When will I be able to go back to work?" was the first thing she asked.

"Workaholic, I take it?" he teased her. "We wanna keep you in here at least for the next couple of days. After you're released, though personally I'd recommend you take some time off to relax, be waited upon and generally be treated like royalty, you'll probably be able to return to work. However you'll have to take it easy, so that would probably mean desk-duty for a while..."

Ava rolled her eyes when he called her a workaholic. She really hated being called like that. Many people thought that she was a workaholic, but she thought that she was just a young woman who knew exactly what her priorities were. He was probably just like her. He was a doctor and, like it or not, all doctors, especially surgeons were crazy about work. She sighed again as he spoke. "Well, being treated like royalty doesn't sound too bad, but desk duty does," she muttered to herself, passing a hand through her hair.

His gentle smile wavered when he saw her roll her eyes. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to offend. I get called a workaholic though I don't especially think of myself as one. Don't take my teasing to heart," he told her, making a note on her chart. He grinned. "I'll bet that someone as pretty as you is bound to get treated like royalty when word gets out that you're stuck here for a while." Mentally he kicked himself - he knew he had to stay impersonal, but he couldn't help himself making that remark.

Ava looked at him in surprise at his latest remark. It was pretty weird, as she knew that doctors, just like detectives, had to stay impersonal and couldn't get attached to people they worked it on a case. And Dr.Hunt seemed to her like a strong, tough one, a leader and a great doctor. So, this thing he said was a bit surprising. Anyway, she couldn't say that she minded that. The more he stayed in her room, the more she realized how good-looking he was and how much power he seemed to have. She looked up at him with a serious, yet kind of dreamy face, which was so out-of-character for her. "Okay..." was all she managed to say.

Ava looked away from him, trying to act like her practical, down-to-earth, professional self again. She slightly shook her head. "No, it's okay," she said. "The guy who was with me knows, so I guess there are already too many who know what happened."

He nodded upon hearing that. "I figured that news would travel fast at MDPD..." He checked his watch, remembering that although he would like to stay here and talk with her he had several other patients to see first. "I have to go finish my rounds, but I promise I'll drop by to see how you're doing." His eyes flickered to the door and he grinned. "Besides, it looks like you already have a visitor..." Just before he left he turned back to her. "Before I go though, any more questions you might have?"

Ava nodded when he said that he had to go. It was normal, being a doctor was not easy. When he said that she had a visitor, she just rolled her eyes. She didn't know who it might be, but she knew that she hated being seen weak and powerless like that. "No," she replied shortly. What more questions could she have? She had been shot, she had been on the verge of dying and he had brought her back to life. It was a simple ecuation and she didn't exactly know what more she could ask for.

Madison tentatively poked her head round Ava's door. "Hi Ava..." She wasn't sure if the female would like to see her or not but Maddy had wanted to visit her, especially since Ava had helped clear her in a case earlier. "I was nearby when I heard what happened. I brought you these..." she said producing a small bouquet of pink and red miniature roses. "Just thought they might make you smile..." she trailed off lamely. She was a bit nervous as she and Ava weren't exactly the best of friends and Maddy didn't want to intrude if Ava didn't want her there.

It was true that Ava didn't really want visitors, but when she saw Madison, she let a smile spread on her face. She hadn't known her for long and they were not extremely close, but she seemed like a great girl and she really liked her. "Heeey, hon'," she greeted her warmly. "Thank you so much," she said, taking the flowers.

"I'm glad to see you're ok," Maddy said with a smile. "Well, ok given the circumstances. The talk is that had there been more delays things wouldn't have been so smooth. But you got a great surgeon and knowing you, you'll be well in no time," she said with a grin. She knew that when Ava set her mind to something she always got it and Maddy was sure that this time would be no different.

Ava smiled. It was good to know that she was known as a strong, ambitious woman by the people who knew her. "Thank you," she said. But then, something else passed her mind and she raised her brows in surprise. "Wait, do you know my doctor?" she asked, as Madison said that she had a great surgeon.
